About Megan Callahan

3-5 Grade Self-contained Special Education Teacher

M.S.Ed., Johns Hopkins University

The first time I walked into a special education class I was in high school. I was writing a story for the yearbook about the newly-launched special education program. Despite the challenges they faced, the students in the class loved learning and being around their peers. Their teacher was able to address their behavioral and communicative challenges, and she showed them that they could be full citizens with career and college options. It was inspiring to see.

At the time, I never thought I would be leading a SPED classroom. But fast forward to today, and I have my own special education class in Washington, D.C.

I believe every student deserves an equitable education that provides them with options for the future, and that’s what I strive to give my kids every day. I love showing my fellow teachers and administrators how much students with exceptionalities are capable of. To say that my job is challenging is an understatement, but it’s also incredibly rewarding.

The SPED Creative shares resources and ideas that other teachers can apply in their classrooms, discusses the ups and downs of teaching students with exceptionalities, and helps teachers find a balance between work and life.
